Privately Funded Legal Work in Inquests
Inquest representation can be arranged on a privately funded basis, in the event that legal aid is not available. The Inquest Representation Service can advise clients on the likely representation costs involved, once the relevant paperwork becomes available and the number of days the inquest will take place over are known.
Some household insurance policies, business insurance policies, and certain professional indemnity policies, may cover inquest legal represenentation and advice. Contact your insurer for details. We may be able to assist you in completing insurance claim forms.

Our phone and email reception team will obtain some basic details about the issues that you wish to discuss, and an experienced inquest law lawyer will then call you back at a convenient time on a number that you provide. We aim to call within a couple of hours, subject to the availability of our inquest law specialist lawyers. Our inquest law lawyers may be in court during office hours and may therefore seek to call you during the evening, subject to your convenience.
Our lawyer’s fees are dependent on a number of factors, depending on the complexity of the issues in the case, the seniority and experience of the lawyer needed, the number of pages of evidence and other exhibits involved, the number of procedural steps that need to be taken, the location of the hearing, the number of days in court or tribunal, whether there is a solicitor involved or whether the case is on a direct access basis, among other things.
If you give us a call we will be able to provide you with quotes and guidance on likely future fees. We can quote for stages of work and in some instances provide a global fee quote. However, some cases will develop over time and it will be dependent on the requirements at each stage as to how many hours or days need to be spent on preparing a case or presenting a can in court.
Our hourly rates start at £150.
The average fees charged per hour are £200 to £250, more in complex cases, rising to £525 in multiple diseased victim cases. VAT is additionally chargable where our lawyers are VAT registered.
Where possible we will provide a fixed fee for a piece of work. We usually charge fixed fees for conferences and hearings. It may be possible to charge fixed fees for other work, once we have scoped out what is needed. A first conference is often needed to go through the issues in the case to be able to provide more clear guidance or quotes.
A half day in court can be from £450 upwards. A full day in court from £700 upwards. Five days representation in court will generally be in the region of £2,400 to £7,000, depending on the nature of the case. For longer hearings we can often provide bespoke quotes.
VAT at 20% is additionally payable on our fees.
